DAVAO: Life is here

Featured

Welcome! You just entered the blog series of Davao City by yours truly, Jings’ Journeys 🙂 It is our pleasure to give you the right, updated and accurate information you  need about this incredible province.

The vlog shown above were being recorded and edited by Jings’ Journeys.

As we all know, the province of Davao or even the Davao city itself  is a highly urbanized city in the island of Mindanao in the Philippines; and it is also the largest city in the Philippines in terms of land area, and the most populous city in the country outside Metro Manila.

Aside from being the home of the Mt. Apo, which is the highest mountain of the Philippines, it also serves as the main trade, commerce, and industry hub of Mindanao and the regional center of Davao Region.

One of the things that the province of Davao is very proud of, are: durians, the flowers of waling waling or vanda sanderiana, the purple mangosteen and the fact that it is also described as one of the world’s safest city.

Now let’s talk about its history… the beginnings of Davao as a distinct geopolitical entity started during the last fifty years of Spanish rule in the country. While Spanish sovereignty had been established along the northeastern coasts of Mindanao down to Bislig as early as 1620, it was not until the conquest of Davao Gulf area in 1848 that Spanish sway in these parts became de facto, and Davao’s history began to be recorded.

That year, Don Jose Cruz de Oyanguren, a native of Vergara, Guipuzcoa, Spain, having received a special grant from Don Narciso Claveria, Governor- General of the Archipelago, “to conquer and subdue the entire gulf district, expel or pacify the Moros there, and establish the Christian religion….” arrived in Davao as head of a colonizing expedition comprising 70 men and women.

During the early years of American rule which began in late December 1898 the town began to mark its role as a new growth center of the Philippines. The American settlers, mostly retired soldiers and investor friends from Zamboanga,Cebu, Manila and the U.S. mainland immediately recognized Davao’s rich potential for agricultural investment. Primeval forest lands were available everywhere. They staked their claim generally in hundreds of hectares and began planting rubber, abaca and coconuts in addition to different varieties of tropical plants imported from Ceylon, India, Hawaii, Java and Malaysia. In the process of developing large-scale plantations, they were faced with the problem of lack of laborers.

Thus, they contracted workers from Luzon and the Visayas, including the Japanese, many of whom were former laborers in the Baguio, Benguet road construction. Most of these Japanese later became land-owners themselves as they acquired lands thru lease from the government or bought out some of the earlier American plantations. It became a regular port of call by inter-island shipping and began direct commercial linkages abroad – US, Japan, Australia, etc. Some 40 American and 80 Japanese plantations proliferated throughout the province in addition to numerous stores and business establishments. Davao saw a rapid rise in its population and its economic progress gave considerable importance to the country’s economy and foreign trade.

It should also be noted that most of the Bagobos who originally possessed the lands surrounding Davao Poblacion and the coasts to Digos have intermarried with the Spaniards, the Americans and later the Japanese, thereby creating the mestizo breed of Spanish-Bagobos, America-Bagobos and Japanese-Bagobos.

The Lumads from Malita down to Sarangani have mainly intermarried with the American pioneer planters in that territory and have produced the American – B’laan mestizos. The eastern gulf of Davao from Sigaboy down to cape San Agustin and up to Mati and Cateel, Davao Oriental, the main lumad group, the Mandayas had primarily came in contact with early Spanish explorers and settlers and thus we have among them the preponderant Spanish-Mandaya mestizos/mestizas.

It is therefore no wonder that Davao may rightly claim the honor as the place of beautiful people, for reasons that the inhabitants here have been exposed to a more varied racial stock for over three centuries!

Roxas Night Market

IMG_2537.jpg

Let’s face it. Roxas Night Market probably makes some people remember how many people died because of the bombing incident held at the said attraction, yet the locals and LGUs successfully made the people believe in Davao City’s safeness and security again by proving that Davao City or even the whole Mindanao is not just about bombing and so called wars, for it is also about the purity of love, kindness and beauty.

Furthermore, Roxas night market became famous because of its diversified variety of local food selections and ukay ukays or pre-loved clothes. It also offers blind and street massage. Charcoal or black ice creams are also being offered!

Below are the photos taken by Jings’ Journeys at Roxas Night Market:

And here we present to you, the wild yet harmless night life of Davao City…

Beereaucracy

weekends-at-the-beereaucracy

Located in a small nook along Palma Gil Street in Obrero, occupying a former photo studio. It is strategically located beside the popular Brewery Bar and adjacent to Bricklane Square, a strip of bars frequented by Dabawenyos during weekends. Beereaucracy is a unique one compared to its competitors as it offers more than 70 brands of beers on its menu, including 62 craft beers not found in regular bars in the city.

Craft beers are made by small, independent brewers using traditional or innovative brewing techniques that produces a unique flavors not tasted in regular beers. According to Nico, the owner of the said bar, Filipinos are more familiar with lagers. A kind of beer stored in low-temperature conditions and used of bottom fermenting yeast. Popular lagers are the San Miguel Pale Pilsens, the Red Horse and San Miguel Light, Beer na Beer, Gold Eagle, and etc. Beereaucracy apart from Lagers has a wide array of Ale another beer type known for its warm fermentation method and characterized for being fruity, sweet and full-bodied taste.

Popular beer styles in the bar include Indian Pale Ale which is characterized with a strong hoppy flavor. Nico says IPA originated in India when it was still colonized under the British colony. Craft beer’s commitment to quality, consistency and uniqueness being strict to the integrity of its ingredients like wheat or barley, malts, hops and yeasts makes it the most expensive among mainstream beers.

If you want to try out a one-of-a-kind beer adventure head out to the BEEReaucracy in Obrero and explore their wide array of craft beers that you won’t find here in Davao City.

Stre3ts Urban Lifestyle Pub

davao_guide_urban_lifestyle.jpg

Stre3ts is an Irish-Western kind of pub that seeks to introduce the pub life in the city where anyone can just be casual. Known for being a prime nightlife destination, Stre3ts also takes pride for introducing draft beer in Davao. Their flavored draft beers make their loyal customers come back for more, as they always create new flavors every month. Stre3ts’ very own bartender concocts its own cocktail mixes thus making it a place to be when it comes to booze.

Aside from beer-lovers, foodie and non-drinkers will also love their creative dishes they themselves crafted. Check out their unique dishes which are best paired with their selection of mocktails and cocktails at the bar. If you want your usual bottle of beer to cap off the night, they also serve these in the resto.

The place has become a favorite spot for nightly hangouts especially that it has this chill atmosphere that just makes you want to enjoy the night with great food and drinks. The theme of the pub is urban and modern, living up to its name “street” which is definitely a notch above the rest of the bars in Davao City.

Aside from being a pub, Stre3ts is popular with their urban clothing line as well. Inside the place you can see merchandise of elite street wear, from shirt, to pants, and other trendy clothes that speak “urban.”

Huckleberry

huckle

Whether or not you’re familiar with the nightlife and food scene in Davao, it may seem a bit uncanny at first: One of the city’s coolest places to drink sits on the ground floor of an old heritage house inside a nondescript compound, on the corner of two streets that—at least to an impudent native of Imperial Manila—seem fairly unremarkable. The place itself, however, happens to be one of the region’s most happening: Huckleberry Southern Kitchen and Bar, nestled discretely in the heart of Davao City’s “old barrio.” It opened in 2014 and has since become a stalwart in the local scene.

Huckleberry’s fare is Southern American—good old-fashioned “soul food from the Creoles to the Carolinas.” It’s a novel coincidence, perhaps, that Davao happens to be a southern region of the Philippines, but not one that suggests any less of Huckleberry’s authenticity and truth-to-form. The specialties will speak for themselves: Slow-roasted Beef Belly, Huevos Rancheros Chili, and Southern Fried Chicken and Waffles. In fact, the entire menu is an ode to American classics: Jambalaya, Po’Boy, Gumbo, and Cajun Fries, stand out among others, each given its own modern twist.

berry

More impressive still is that a lot of Huckleberry’s dishes are made with locally sourced, seasonal ingredients; some entirely homemade. They smoke their own bacon, sausages, and jerk chicken; bake their own muffins; blend their own Cajun sauce; and even source their oysters from Aklan. The food here is original and authentic in that sense: Southern America by way of the Philippines, if you will—foreign cuisine with a homegrown touch.

It’s rare that you find a good place to drink that gets all the elements right, especially if you’ve developed a selective palate for fine liquor. Finding one in these parts is especially exciting for both locals and visitors. Luckily, Huckleberry Southern Kitchen and Bar lives up to its namesake, Huckleberry Finn, and the American idiom that he became—it’s just the right one for the job.

DAVAO: Restaurants

Welcome to the fourth blog series of Davao City by Jings’ Journeys!❤

The fastest and easiest way to experience the culture of a destination is to taste its culinary offerings. Although Davao is not known for a specific dish unlike other provinces here in the Philippines like Bicol’s laing or Bacolod’s inasal, the city’s gourmet experts have the chance to be more playful and think of thoughts that best feature well known Davao products such as Pomelo or Durian.

For example, in spite of the fact that the pomelo salad of mixed greens is generally served in numerous restaurants here, Selera’s version arrives like an invigorating tropical burst in a plate with distinctive hues and clean taste. Clearly enlivened by the Thai plate of mixed greens, this one seems to be a moderate variant, with the tart organic product essentially hurled with onions and herbs and the nearby patis.

Davao has various crab restaurants, with a few of them contending to be declared the city’s best. One restaurant that can aim for this title is this unassuming restaurant. Truth be told, numerous have just passed judgment on it as their most loved in Davao. While seafood boil restaurants are presently growing in Manila as well, Blue Post is pretty difficult to beat.

The ambience has that local shoreline resort feel with its nautical stylistic layout. The simple interiors coordinate the fun feasting knowledge guaranteed by the restaurant. This isn’t formal feasting by any means; truth be told, it’s the direct inverse. The food is for all intents and purposes hurled on the table and visitors are given plastic dispensable gloves rather than forks and spoons.

In spite of the fact that there are different things on the menu, individuals come here normally for the seafood boil. Be that as it may, regardless of whether you’re sensitive to shellfish, don’t stress. Diners can look over crabs, shrimps, mussels and tuna belly. At that point, they give their cooking inclination – the Blue Post Boil or garlic-seared. At that point select the coveted flavor level – normal, gentle or hot and fiery. Need additional items? You can include corn, potatoes and sausages to the blend.

marina

Despite the fact that tuna is more identified to General Santos City, this restaurant is without a doubt a Davao culinary milestone and a most loved of the both locals and guests.

Marina Tuna is acclaimed for setting up this fish in 10 diverse ways, in spite of the fact that its huge menu really demonstrates much in excess of 10 fish dishes on offer (including tuna spaghetti and tuna lugaw for merienda). Burger joints can appreciate tuna crude (sashimi) or sizzling, flame broiled or as a soup. They can go for tuna belly, tail, jaw (panga) or even the eggs (bihod). There is even a fish kare-kare, despite the fact that local people swear by the tuna eye sinigang.

Despite its name, there is a whole other world to Marina Tuna than this one fish as it additionally offers salmon, lapu-lapu, blue marlin and bangus, among others. Its tagline is really “the best tuna and fish,” so you can likewise arrange shrimps, shellfish, mollusks, scallops and crabs. Be that as it may, the restaurant is extremely a hodge-podge of Pinoy top choices from grill to adobo, and there is additionally an undeniable Japanese bent with things like sashimi and even bento boxes.

Marina Tuna is only the perfect easygoing restaurant to commend great moments with friends!

DAVAO: Parks and Museum

Welcome to the second blog series of Davao by Jings’ Journeys!❤

This time we’re gonna talk about unique museums and parks!

Among all the provinces we have here in the Philippines, Davao City will not let its province to be just stepped down when it comes to parks and museums. Just so you know there is a museum here in Davao City which is the first here in the Philippines. Continue on reading our blog and you’ll find it out later!

First, let’s talk about the most famous park in the whole Mindanao. Excited? Well, can’t blame if you are😉

People’s Park

People’s Park during night

People's_Park,_Davao_City,_Philippines_(1_May_2010).jpg

People’s Park during day

People’s Park is of course, an urban public park in central Davao City. It had a soft opening on August 2007 during Kadayawan Festival. It is also one of the most expensive parks built in the Philippines that costed about ₱71 million which was commenced on July 2006. Right now, the said park is under reconstruction to make it more attractive not just for the tourists, but the locals themselves.

People’s Park derived its name from the contest organized by the city government, which was chosen among the 918 entries of the “Name of the Park.” The winning name was made by the retired engineer and seaman, Mr. Romeo Sardon.

One of the main features of the park is a 425 square meters visitors’ center, the durian Dome, which has a design inspired from the durian fruit. The Open Plaza hosts a rainbow walk through drive where some potted palms are displayed.

The park also hosts sculptures done by Mindanao artist Kublai Millan which depicts indigenous people. A dancing fountain is also present within the park’s ground. It has been described as “one of the cleanest and greenest public parks” in the Philippines.

Photos shown above are (of course ;P ) the photos taken by Jings’ Journeys at People’s Park.

Magsaysay Park

Magsaysay-Park-Playground.jpg

Playground in Magsaysay Park

The Magsaysay Park in Davao City is a beautifully landscaped public park that sits on a huge sprawling expanse that faces the clear blue waters of the Gulf of Davao with the Samal Island in the backdrop. While there are many parks in Davao City, this park remains the favorite of the locals and is frequented by foreign tourists, families and friends alike for an afternoon of leisurely stroll, or simply hanging-out.

This city landmark was built in honor of the most-loved and revered president of the Philippines, Ramon Magsaysay who, in March 17, 1957, died in a plane crash in Mount Manunggal on Cebu Island while en route to Manila. He was the third President of the Republic of the Philippines.

74434343.jpg

The Park features several amenities such as an open-air amphitheater which serves, among other things, the regular venue for public discos during Sundays which can accommodate 2,000 persons, a restaurant, a cooling station, several food kiosks, ornamental plants stalls, souvenir and handicraft stalls, a skating rink, a children’s playground, an open-air chapel, and a secured parking area which is located south of the park.

It also houses several tourism offices: the regional office of the Department of Tourism, the Philippine Tourism Authority, the Department of Foreign Affairs Regional Passport Office, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, the Philippine Information Agency, the Samal Island Tourism Estate Project, and the DXRP Radyo ng Bayan.

Now let’s move on to the next, which is…!

Davao City’s Museums

First off, we have… *drum rolls*

Malagos Chocolate Museum!

Watch Kriztja visit the budget friendly and the first of its kind Museum here in the country~

Last November 18, the first ever Chocolate Museum in the country will open its doors at Malagos Garden Resort, Baguio District in Davao City.

According to the managing director of Malagos Garden Resort, Ms. Charisse Puentespina, they came up with this museum because of the tourists who had the same question in their minds, which is: “how do you make your chocolates?” Also, the said manager stated that the goal of opening a Chocolate Museum is also to help the small medium entrepreneurs.
See Where You Can Find The First Chocolate Museum In The Philippines.jpgThe distinct taste of Malagos Chocolates were able to get numerous international awards such as the 2016 Great Taste Award in United Kingdom, 2016 Academy of Chocolate Award, 2015 International Chocolate Award in Germany, and 2013 Asean Best Food Products Recognition Awards in Singapore.

Also, the said museum offers chocolate making tutorial, so it’s not just about tasting the Davao’s own chocolate but also tasting your diy or “do-it-yourself” chocolate. Even famous celebrities or locals don’t wanna stop making and tasting their own chocolate.

The land is rich with fertile soil and blessed with a favorable climate which is just right to give the cacao trees an ideal condition to produce beans. For now, Davao City is positioned to be the country’s cacao capital. Cacao is one of the priority commodities identified by the Department of Agriculture.

D’Bone Collector Museum

thumb.jpg

With over 700 specimens, D’Bone Collector Museum has one of the largest collections of bones, skulls, and skeletons in the country. It is touted to be the first of its kind in Davao City, if not in the Philippines.

American Darrell Dean Blatchley, who is the president and curator of the D’Bone Collector Museum, started collecting bones when he was still a teenager. His fascination with bones made him discover that there’s more to an animal than just meat. Equally important are the bones.

The museum was opened last 2012, with a total of 150 specimens in one-story of the building. From 250 square meters when it opened, the museum display area now covers 700 square meters. The museum has been recognized as having the largest collection of assembled skeletons of whales and dolphins in the Philippines.

To be added soon is a skeleton of an elephant, which stands nearly 12 feet tall. “It will be only elephant skeleton in the Philippines,” he says. “We are currently working on getting rhino, hippo, and giraffe. We have 150 specimens in our American collection and we are contemplating of bringing them here in the country.”

The museum is open from Mondays to Fridays. Entrance fee is P80 for adults and P70 for children and students.
